Karina Cavat is a visual artist and a children's art teacher. She has over twenty years teaching experience working in public and private schools, colleges, museums and community art centers.  Since 2008 she has worked as a teaching artist for STUDIO in a SCHOOL, a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to foster the creative and intellectual development of New York City youth through quality visual arts programs in public schools. She has also provided through STUDIO arts services such as Community Art Fairs, Family Engagements and Professional Development art workshops for classroom teachers and administrators. Cavat has taught in over thirty different public schools, exclusively in the visual arts: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. Before joining STUDIO, Cavat worked with a number of other non-profit arts organizations such as Artsgenesis, Marquis Studios, Bronx Arts Ensemble and Creative Classrooms. As one of the lead artists at Artsgenesis, she designed and facilitated site and student specific interdisciplinary Multiple Intelligences based programs for such organizations as Community Access Unlimited, Arts Unbound, and as the teaching artist in residency at the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Fanwood, NJ, devised and executed several art programs ending in long-term displays of children’s works. In addition to her community work as teaching artist, Cavat has provided creative direction as the Visual Arts Professional Developer for the Archdiocese of NY through Creative Classrooms, and in her role served as art teacher, mentor, curator and docent in over 15 different catholic schools. She has worked exclusively in District 75 with Marquis Studios while serving over 200 students in specialized courses in three-dimensional design, assemblage and comic book design.


Before working with children, Cavat taught art to undergraduates as an adjunct professor at the University of California Santa Barbara and at Santa Barbara City College. She has also held a position as an adjunct for a number of years at Parsons, School of Design in New York City. Working as a museum artist educator at the Santa Barbara Art Museum and the Montclair Art Museum she has directed and taught specialized courses in Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain, Decorative and Faux Finishes, and High School Portfolio Prep.
Cavat received a B.F.A in painting from SUNY Purchase College and a M.F.A in painting from Parsons, School of Design, she also was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in painting to Rome, Italy.  She is currently working on her Advanced Certificate in art education at Brooklyn College.

 

In addition to her teaching practice with STUDIO in a School, Cavat has been teaching Drawing Together workshops at Kentler International Drawing Space in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Workshops are based on Kentler's current  exhibitions and range from printmaking and observational drawing to assemblage and wearable art. Cavat maintains an art studio in Manhattan and is at present working on a series of paintings to be viewed in an exhibition as an installation piece in New York City in 2018.
